Endodontics refers to a specialized form of dentistry that concerns itself with the root canal treatment. A root canal, also called an endodontic procedure, occurs when bacteria forms in the soft tissue of a tooth or near a tooth. If not treated, this can result in tooth decay, gum disease, or other problems. As such, an endodontic specialist seeks to treat these conditions so that teeth can be saved and maintained.

Endodontics includes over 100 subspecialties, including periodontics and periradicular (or root canal) procedures. Periradicular treatment involves root canal treatment but is limited to only two sites; the primary endodontic site and the secondary endodontics site. An endodontic specialist uses different surgical techniques, including surgical lipectomy, periapical lipectomy, endodontics headgear, dental bridges, dental veneers, and resin implants. Although these specialists are trained on many different approaches, most utilize a combination of surgical techniques in order to give the patient the best chance for recovery. They are extremely thorough in their treatments, taking great care to preserve as much of the patient’s oral and dental structure as possible.

To understand what an endodontic specialist does, it helps to know a bit about the general structure of a tooth. Each tooth has a pulp or, technically, a pulp chamber, which houses bacteria that can cause decay and other problems. The dentist removes this bacterial infection by using root canal therapy, which is a form of endodontics. However, the treatment must be performed in a careful and mindful manner in order to not damage the root canal layer and create further problems for the patient. Fortunately, endodontics doctors have studied extensively the effect of root canal therapy on the tooth structure and have developed endodontic procedures that avoid any unnecessary damage to the pulp and, thus, the tooth.
